The city of Tangier is located in the north of Morocco on the North African coast, at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibralta, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. The city has been under the rule of a number of different civilisations during its long and interesting history, which began in the 5th century BC. There are numerous development projects ongoing in the city which includes new projects along the bay for tourism, a modern business district named Tangier City Centre, a new airport terminal and a new football stadium. The new Tangier-Med port is also expected to provide a huge economic boost to the city.
The Kasbah towers over Tangiers' old town. The ancient fortifications were once part of the city's defences but today many have been turned into private residences, hotels, museums and restaurants. A popular attraction with tourists is the Kasbah Museum which is located just off Place du Mechouar and on display are relics from the Stone Age through to the beginning of the 20th century all of which shed light on the city's past. There is evidence in the museum of the many peoples who have inhabited or ruled this region. Not to be missed is a beautiful mosaic taken from the Roman city of Volubilis and a nice stroll through the Sultan’s Gardens.
Gibralta is located at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsular, at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, and is a British Overseas Territory. Sharing a border with Spain, Gibralta is a major tourist attraction in the region, and whose economy has traditionally been dominated by the British military, with naval dockyards providing the bulk of the economic activity. Over recent decades though the influence of the military on Gibraltar's economy has declined, to be replaced by financial services, online gambling, shipping and tourism. Gibraltar's port is a popular stopover port for cruise ships whose many passengers disembark for day trips onto the Rock which is also popular with day trippers from Spain. Gibraltar's shops are also of particular interest to its visitors as all goods sold on the Rock are VAT exempt, as are the services provided from Gibralta.
