Located on the Mornington Peninsular, south east of Melbourne, is the town of Sorrento Pier. It has always been a popular destinations for people living in Melbourne who would have originally arrived by paddle steamer, and then steam tram across the peninsular to the beach, in the late 19th century. Today, the town is popular with tourists looking to participate in water based activities although there is a lovely walk to be had along the pier which was built in the 1870's. The town's development was down to the pier as it enabled steamships bringing people from Melbourne to access the town. The last steamship docked at the pier in 1942.
Located to the south east of Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsular is surrounded by Port Philip to the west, Western Port to the east and the Bass Strait to the south.
