Rio Marina is Commune on the Island of Elba, in the Italian region of Tuscany. The area is on the eastern part of the Elba, inside a small inlet surrounded by hills. Evidence shows that the earliest settlements in the area date back to the 15th century. Iron oxide extraction took place here as the main activity of the inhabitants since as early as the Etruscan period. The hills in the area are characterised by red earth which is due to iron oxide mining in the past. The last mines closed in October 1981 and nowadays, Rio Marina is a seaside resort with an economy mostly based on tourism. A few of the places of historical and cultural interests include the Church of San Rocco, the embattled tower in the port, the Mineral Park of the Island of Elba as well as the village of Cavo.
Situated on the south west coast of Italy, Piombino is a small town bordering the Ligurian Sea and Tyrrhenian Sea. There are many ferry routes departing, supplied by several ferry companies, and range from around 40 minutes to nine hours.
