Portsmouth Guide

Portsmouth Ferry Port

Situated on the south coast of the UK, about two hours on the train from London, Portsmouth is one of the biggest cities in the south of England. The ferry routes departing the port head to France and Spain, ranging from 45 minutes to 11 hours.

What is there to do in Portsmouth Harbour?

Portsmouth is a city drenched in activity, yet much of the attraction lies in its harbour. HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and The National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth offer a fascinating look into the history of Portsmouth’s Naval fleet and its prominence in protecting the shores. There are tours of the harbour and the Naval fleet for fairly affordable prices, especially for anyone with a particular interest in history. The ships are the highlight of the harbour, yet the entire waterfront is drenched in unique infrastructure. A short walk up from the harbour and you’ll find one of the most famous shopping centres on the south coast; Gunwharf Quays is a large shopping complex filled with discount designer outlet stores as well as a cinema and bowling alley. Many tourists come to Portsmouth just to scour the aisles for bargains and peruse the shops for bespoke items at remarkably low prices. After a long day of shopping, head to one of the many fine quality restaurants dotted along the waterfront, with cuisine from across the globe being represented.

How do you get around Portsmouth Harbour?

The harbour is fairly small and can be covered entirely by foot. To access the harbour, many choose the ferry which comes from other areas around Portsmouth.

Fishbourne Guide

Fishbourne Ferry Port

On the north-western coast of the Isle of Wight, along one turfed bank of the Wootton Creek estuary, is the picturesque village of Fishbourne. This small, laid-back community is surrounded by typically British countryside; a landscape defined by a spring-green patchwork of fields and gentle hills, between which twist narrow lanes shaded by the leafy boughs of oak and ash trees. The port of Fishbourne is found by the mouth of Wootton Creek that curves along one edge of the village. It’s little more than a narrow pier that points out from the estuary towards The Solent channel separating the island from the southern coast of the British mainland. There are very few facilities here, although a bar and toilets can be found at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club near the entrance to the port. Getting to and from the port is easy due to Fishbourne’s location just a 5-minute drive from the island’s seaside capital of Ryde along the A3054. The Island Line, the most extensive train route on the isle, runs from the capital towards the settlements of the eastern region, most notably the town of Brading that sits close to the island’s Bembridge Airport. Currently one ferry route runs from the port. Wightlink lines depart from the pier multiple times throughout the day, making the short trip north across The Solent to the sprawling harbour-side town of Portsmouth on the southern coast of England.
