Athens (Piraeus) Guide

Athens (Piraeus) Ferry Port

The port city of Piraeus can be found in the Attica region of Greece along the east coast of the Saronic Gulf about 12 km south west of Athens, the Greek capital. Piraeus is the largest ferry port in Europe and one of the largest in the world when it comes to passenger transportation with services provided by every major ferry company in Greece. Approximately 20 million passengers pass through its doors each year and the port provides the main link between the Greek mainland and the Aegean islands and Crete. Piraeus proves the gateway from the Greek mainland to all of the main holiday destinations in Greece and some of the less popular ones too. Piraeus is also famous for its football team – Olympiakos who regularly feature in the UEFA Champions League.

Tinos Guide

Tinos Guide

Tinos is one of the biggest of the Cyclades Island’s in Greece. Tinos is famous amongst Greeks for the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, its numerous windmills, artistic dovecotes, numerous villages and its Venetian fortifications at the mountain, Exobourgo. Tinos is located near the geographical centre of the Cyclades island group, and because of the Panagia Evangelistria church, with its icon of Virgin Mary, Tinos is also the centre of a yearly pilgrimage that takes place on the date of the dormition of the Virgin Mary. This is perhaps the most notable and still active yearly pilgrimage in the region of the eastern Mediterranean. Many pilgrims make their way the 800 metres from the ferry wharf to the church on their hands and knees as sign of devotion.
