Regarded as the ‘Jewel of Cyprus’ because of its picturesque harbour and adjacent castle, Kyrenia Port arguably boasts the most beautiful harbour in the world. Its location on the northern coast makes it the ideal setting for transport links with Turkey, with the Turkish mainland only forty miles away. The castle has been overlooking the harbour for the past four and a half centuries; there have been extensions and enlargements over the decades to maintain its stature. The harbour is well located within the town; copious restaurants and bars reside near there, making it one of the liveliest and energetic parts of Kyrenia. A slight renovation has occurred over the years in an attempt to bring a modern look to the port, yet preserve the historic feel. Due to its location, most of the restaurants will serve Turkish Cypriot cuisine, with seafood being the prominent dish. The age of the town is important to the residents and they like to keep the same quiet, peaceful vibe that it has always had, so there is no loud music or flashing lights around the port. The Venetian Tower can be witnessed next to the harbour, providing an impressive view whilst waiting for the next departure. The back streets in and around the castle bring an artistic feel to the area; a museum and shops selling local art can be found after a quick wander. The port is within walking distance of all the major attractions, making transport free and easy. The only ferry route from Kyrenia is to Tasucu on the Turkish coast, which makes the crossing around once a day.
