Jersey Guide

Jersey Guide

Jersey is a British crown dependency in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy. Along with the Guernsey it forms the grouping known as the Channel Islands. The defence of all these islands is the responsibility of the United Kingdom. However, Jersey is not part of the UK, nor the European Union, but is rather a separate possession of the Crown. Jersey’s prehistoric period produced a rich legacy of artefacts. Remnants of a great French forest that existed over 10,000 years ago, when the Island was part of the continent can still be seen today at St Ouen when there is a low tide. Flints and crude stone tools were left by hunters in La Cotte a la Chevre (Goat’s cave) now perched 60 feet (18 m) above the sea level on the north coast of St Ouen and La Cotte de St Brelade is one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in Europe.

What is there to do in Portsmouth Harbour?

Portsmouth is a city drenched in activity, yet much of the attraction lies in its harbour. HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and The National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth offer a fascinating look into the history of Portsmouth’s Naval fleet and its prominence in protecting the shores. There are tours of the harbour and the Naval fleet for fairly affordable prices, especially for anyone with a particular interest in history. The ships are the highlight of the harbour, yet the entire waterfront is drenched in unique infrastructure. A short walk up from the harbour and you’ll find one of the most famous shopping centres on the south coast; Gunwharf Quays is a large shopping complex filled with discount designer outlet stores as well as a cinema and bowling alley. Many tourists come to Portsmouth just to scour the aisles for bargains and peruse the shops for bespoke items at remarkably low prices. After a long day of shopping, head to one of the many fine quality restaurants dotted along the waterfront, with cuisine from across the globe being represented.

How do you get around Portsmouth Harbour?

The harbour is fairly small and can be covered entirely by foot. To access the harbour, many choose the ferry which comes from other areas around Portsmouth.
