Hou is a very small town on the Jutland Peninsula, a narrow stretch of land that belongs to Denmark. It is easily reached from nearby Danish towns and villages, with regular bus links providing transportation for the residents of the neighbouring town of Arhus. Just north of the ferry port are some simplistic sandy beaches, ideal for spending a spare hour or two before departure. For the more active traveller, hiking and cycle trails are hidden in the depths of neighbouring forests – a perfect distraction for visitors looking to stay in the town for a few days. The only ferry route departing from the port is provided by Samso Rederi; the crossing is to Saelvig Port on the island of Samso and roughly takes one hour. Most days, Samso Island is visible from Hou Port, and at night the port lights up and is known to make for a pleasing view whilst sailing across the small stretch of water. The port itself is relatively basic, though there are a few cafes dotted around that are within walking distance.
