Heysham Guide

Heysham Ferry Port

The quiet seafront settlement of Heysham, found in the north-west county of Lancashire in England, is a picturesque gateway to the Isle of Man. Though known nationally as the site of two nuclear power plants, the village is also steeped in history. St Peter’s Church to the north of the village is a listed Saxon building dating back to the 7th Century while, just a few steps away along the rolling grasses of the shore, a collection of ancient graves hewn into solid rock are said to mark the point of St Patrick’s arrival into England. The port of Heysham has been operating since 1904 and is still a busy industrial port that handles cargo from vehicles to energy products. It is also regularly used by passengers looking to make the short trip across the Irish Sea to the city of Douglas on the rugged eastern shores of the Isle of Man. It’s a route that is particularly popular during May and June when the famed TT motorcycle festival takes place on the island. The ferry terminal can be found on the south bank of the harbour, just off the main A683 road that leads into the cities of Blackpool and Preston. It has a few facilities including disabled toilets, vending machines and a small café selling light snacks. There is also a paid car-park directly adjacent to the terminal. The port is blessed with a number of transport links to most of the major conurbations in the north west. Heysham Harbour train station, which connects directly to the port, offers routes to a wide variety of prime destinations along the Northern Line, including the cities of Manchester and Leeds. At present only one passenger route runs from the port in Heysham. The Steam Packet service travels westwards to Douglas a number of times throughout the week, a short journey that covers the breadth of a narrow inlet of the Irish Sea.

Douglas is the main port of the Isle of Man and features the most extensive facilities for both commercial and private ships. The port is also the only Manx port with dedicated passenger handling facilities for multiple types of ferry.
