Helsingor Guide

Helsingor Ferry Port

Regarded as one of Denmark’s most commonly used ports, Helsingor Port is considered one of the quickest and most reliable gateways from Denmark to Sweden. The port is found on the north east coast of Zealand, an island laying just off the coast of Eastern Denmark. It is most famously known for being the home of Kronborg Castle, the setting for William Shakespeare’s famous play, Hamlet. The castle is representative of the rest of the city; the centre is occupied by quaint pedestrian streets sitting around the impressive cathedral, giving a historic feel to the place. Managing to distribute 72 crossings per day to Helsingborg, a major city on the west coast of Sweden, Helsingor Port is a bustling hub for commuters and is getting busier by the day. The ferry route to Helsingborg only lasts for around 20 minutes, a crossing which is supplied by Scandlines, so typically uses more basic vessels. However, due to recent increases in the volume of traffic, extravagant cruise ships have now been introduced. Around the port area are features of the maritime heritage of the region, including a Danish Maritime Museum which is very popular with visitors.

Helsingborg Guide

Helsingborg Ferry Port

Helsingborg is a charming coastal city perched on the shores of the Øresund Strait that cuts along the south-western edge of Sweden. Affectionally nicknamed the ‘Pearl of the Strait’ due to its attractive mishmash of modern and medieval architecture, the city is one of the oldest settlements in the country with origins stretching back as far as the 11th Century AD. The west-facing beaches and promenades, their edges lined by seafront apartments of eclectic design, overlook the narrowest section of the strait. From here one can watch the ferries and cargo ships carve through the waves as they travel between the North and Baltic Seas. On a clear day, the shores of Denmark can even be spotted peeking over the horizon. Much of Helsingborg’s old town still exists and historic structures stand shoulder to shoulder with new-fangled architecture. The rotund towers and sweeping archways of Helsingborg Castle sit atop a hill at the centre of the city while, on the outskirts, the Raus Kyrka ranks as one of Sweden’s oldest churches. Many of the structures that fringe the downtown streets are arranged in a similar asymmetry of old and new, with square-shaped office blocks standing beside the quaint, half-timbered houses of the 1500’s. The port of Helsingborg is a largely industrial facility that stretches across a large swathe of the city coast. The ferry terminal is located at the northern end of the port, at a spot near the heart of the city. It is nestled in a sheltered pocket of the strait, between a collection of docks and breakwaters that form a maze of rectangular inlets. This large building has plenty of passenger facilities beneath its vaulted roof, including toilets, fast-food restaurants, a stream-lined check-in service, an ATM and a small shop, all spread over several floors. Almost all public transportation passes by the port en route to spots across the city and beyond. The main train station, a short walk from the terminal entrance, offers trips throughout the Scania region, including the major cities of Gothenburg in the north and Malmo in the south. A number of bus stops feeding the inner-districts can also be found on the road tracing the coastline. Ferry services hosted by Scandlines frequently leave from the port of Helsingborg throughout the day. They sail the short distance west across the Øresund Strait to the Danish town of Helsingor on the opposite coast.
