The Swedish town of Grisslehamn is located on the coast by the Sea of Aland and is the main town on the island of Vaddo. The town lies around 110 km to the north of Stockholm and has a long history of being the departure point to the Sea of Aland. A pleasant way to relax is to take a wander around the old fishing harbour where you will find a number of fish shops and cafes. There is also a museum in the harbour dedicated to the painter, illustrator and author, Albert Engstrom, who lived in the town at the beginning of the 20th century. Many of his works are on display in the museum. On the outskirts of the town you can find his art studio on the rocks looking out over the sea.

The town of Eckero is located in Aland, which is an autonomous territory that comes under the sovereignty of Finland, although around 90% of its residents speak Swedish. Previously known as Ekkero in Finnish documents, the municipality today is known simply as Eckero. There is a ferry service, operated by Eckero Linjen, that operates between Berghamn in Storby, Eckero and Grisslehamn on Vaddo, Norrtalje in Sweden. The most famous building in the town is the Post and Customs House which was the largest and most impressive building erected in 1828 to aid postal services between Stockholm and St. Petersburg.

Aland lies at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea and is an autonomous, demilitarised, Swedish speaking region of Finland. Collectively, the islands in the archipelago form the smallest region of Finland, constituting 0.49% of its land area and 0.50% of its population.
