Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Spanish Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, situated off the northwest coast of Africa. Declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2009, Fuerteventura is blessed with the archipelago’s most stunning beaches, a ruggedly beautiful landscape and over 3,000 hours of sunshine each year. It has also long been admired as a top destination for visitors interested in cultural heritage thanks to its large number of centuries-old mansions and beautiful churches. Fuerteventura has a large number of ports along its coast, making it an excellent departure point for the rest of the Canary Islands. Also, with the routes operated by a range of excellent ferry companies, there’s no shortage of sailing options.
Lobos is a small island in the Canaries, just offshore from Fuerteventura in the Atlantic Ocean, to the west of Africa. ‘Wolves Island’, named after the monk seals, or ‘sea wolves’, seen by the Spanish conquerors who discovered it, is volcanic in origin, offering some wonderful walks and panoramic views of the Fuerteventura coastline. And given its small size, Lobos can be explored on foot with ease, where you’re likely to come across a huge variety of colourful flora and diversity of birds, too. Barracuda, hammerhead sharks and bream are also commonly spotted in the surrounding waters, making Lobos an excellent day trip for nature lovers seeking something different to the common beachfront activities found throughout the Canaries. With multiple ferry routes every day from Corralejo in northern Fuerteventura, lasting just fifteen minutes, it couldn’t be easier to hop over and enjoy everything Lobos Island has to offer.
