Found on the western edge of Scotland, on a stretch of mainland that forms part of the Kintyre Peninsula, is the port town of Campbeltown. This settlement on the coast of the Firth of Clyde is most known as one of the few locations legally allowed to produce Scotch Whisky, a craft that has been a proud part of the town’s history for over a century. Those sailing into the port of Campbeltown are greeted by the town’s grand backdrop of spring-green meadows that rise on hills towards the Scottish skyline and offer commanding views across the broad sweep of the coast. Outdoor explorers will find plenty to do, whether it be hiking across the rolling terrain or teeing off at the local Macrihanish golf course; a course renowned for possessing some of the best scenic views of any golf course in the world. The ferry terminal in Campbeltown is found on a small pier mere minutes from the town-centre. It is connected to the rest of the mainland by the A83 road that snakes north up the coast Kintyre Peninsula towards Loch Lomond. Campbeltown airport is only 10 minutes’ drive away too, though flights from here only travel as far as Glasgow across the Firth of Clyde. Currently one service operates from the port of Campbeltown a few times throughout the week. A Caledonian MacBrayne ferry sails the short distance to Ardrossan on the opposite coast, passing below the rocky Isle of Arran as it travels east.
Ardrossan Harbour lies on the North Ayrshire coast in southwest Scotland, providing daily sailings across the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran. Completed in 1864, the harbour has a large seated waiting room and a coffee cabin with a supermarket just a five-minute walk away. The port is served by Ardossan Harbour railway station, Princes Street bus stop and a few short term car parking spaces in front of the terminal building If driving from Glasgow and Edinburgh, head west on the M8 and continue onto the A737 and B714 in Dalry, following signs to Ardrossan.
